Petition text

We call on the Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Justice to scrap damaging proposals in the Police Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill including those which:

  • Threaten freedom of expression and assembly.
  • Increase sentences and police powers aimed at restricting protestors.
  • Criminalises the way of life of the Gypsy and Traveller communities and harms access to the countryside.
  • The full open letter can be found here in collaboration with our friends at 350, Friends of the Earth, Liberty, Greenpeace, Global Justice Now, SumofUs and Tipping Point.

    Why is this important?

The government is trying to rush through legislation that threatens our fundamental democratic rights, giving the police sweeping new powers to restrict the location, time and noise of peaceful protests. It would expand their ability to stop and search and create a new trespass offence that would criminalise the way of life of Gypsy and Traveller communities.

In the UK, we pride ourselves on our democratic values and freedoms of expression. Without it we lose a powerful way of holding the government to account. That’s why now more than ever we must fight against this draconian attack on our civil liberties and marginalized communities.

Can you join members up and down the country by adding your name to the joint letter to stop the attacks on our democratic rights?
