Petition text
- Make big tech companies stick to a code of conduct - so they can’t abuse their powerful position over other organisations.
- Give the government’s new Digital Markets Unit the power to impose massive fines against companies who don’t stick to the code.
- Make it harder for big tech companies to keep buying up smaller rivals - by giving the UK’s competition enforcer the power to review these plans.
Why is this important?
Big tech companies like Facebook and Google have been far too powerful for far too long. Now, finally, the government is doing something about it - by creating a new team to keep these digital giants in check.
This could be a powerful body that really holds these companies to account, backed up by the ability to impose massive fines. Or it could turn out to be a token watchdog with no teeth.
The UK’s competition enforcer, the CMA, wants the new team - the Digital Markets Unit - to have the power to implement a new code of conduct, and fine these companies billions if they don’t stick to it. It also wants to make it harder for the likes of Facebook and Google to keep buying up smaller rivals - so it’s more difficult for them to keep growing and growing.
These proposals would go a long way in reining in the power of Facebook and Google!
