To Home Secretary Priti Patel and Prime Minister Boris Johnson
An open letter on the tragedy in the Channel
Enough is enough. Yesterday, 27 people lost their lives crossing the sea to Britain.
It comes after months of back and forth between the UK and French governments, with real people being used as political footballs.
The UK has a proud history of welcoming refugees and asylum seekers, of showing compassion and kindness to people fleeing danger and violence who just want a safe place to call home. But that history has been all but forgotten in the last few months with increasingly polarising language, and the dehumanisation of people in desperate circumstances.
Please go beyond words and take real action to make sure this doesn't happen again. We need more safe and open routes to the UK for refugees and asylum seekers. The UK Government must create an annual global resettlement commitment - right now, as a country, we have no set commitments for resettling refugees. This has to change.
Yesterday, three children, seven women and seventeen men died trying to reach our shores. This tragedy should not have happened. Please do everything you can to make sure it doesn't happen again.
