To BBC chair Richard Sharp
Petition text
- Is protected as an independent source of news and information, free from political interference.
- Is well-resourced, publicly funded and accessible for all, not hidden behind a subscription service.
- Delivers the same - or a greater - level of information, entertainment and news as it does now - locally, nationally and globally.
Why is this important?
The recent attack on the US Capitol demonstrates more than ever how important responsible and trustworthy news is in a democracy. And, just as the Coronavirus pandemic has done, it helps emphasise why public service broadcasting - rooted in facts - is so vital for us to maintain here in the UK.
The government has just appointed a new BBC boss - Richard Sharp. This week he’ll be in the spotlight, taking questions about where he stands on the future of our BBC. Now is our chance to make sure he knows that we, the British public, want him to protect our public broadcaster.
So together, we’re signing this open letter, asking him to commit to protect the BBC now and into the future.
