OFWAT: LINK WATER BOSSES’ PAY TO SEWAGE POLLUTION LEVELS
Dear Ofwat,
We back your proposals to directly link the pay of water company chief executives to the pollution they pump into our rivers, or risk fines. Thanks for looking out for our rivers and coastlines!
We must urgently reverse the trends of the past few decades and invest in fixing our broken sewerage system. From 1991 to 2019, water companies paid out £57 billion to shareholders while reducing investment in vital new infrastructure. [1] The result? A system that’s not fit for purpose, with raw sewage still being discharged into rivers more than 1,000 times a day. [2]
We agree your plans will push water company executives to take sewage pollution much more seriously - but it’s crucial that you turn words into action now. Ofwat, we call on you to implement these proposals as soon as you can - and make them as ambitious as possible.
Signed,
Thousands of members of the public
