To Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden
Petition text
Why is this important?
The BBC is ours. Whether we turn to it for educational programmes for our children, local reports about our areas, groundbreaking documentaries about our planet or Saturday night entertainment, we all benefit from an independent, public broadcaster that doesn’t rely on generating profits.
Recently the minister in charge of the media, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, said the BBC “will help our children learn whilst we stay home, protect the NHS and save lives", after it announced an unprecedented expansion of educational programming. But just a few weeks ago he questioned whether the BBC should even exist at all, and has asked a powerful group of industry insiders to review its future.
We know what happens when news is run for profit and independence goes out the window. Just look at America. A country dangerously divided with some news programmes spreading false information and conspiracy theories.
We, the public, own the BBC. It’s there to serve us. But we need to keep it that way.
