To Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss
Petition text
Why is this important?
Trans and nonbinary people have been pushing for years for planned reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. Now, a leaked report suggests the government might be going back on their word to change the laws so it's easier for trans and non-binary people to get legal recognition of their gender. Despite the fact that responses to the government's own consultation on the issue were overwhelmingly in favour of making this change.
The current process is expensive, intrusive, and dehumanising. People who want to change their birth certificates have to go through a detailed psychiatric assessment. And since this process came into place only 4,910 people have managed to successfully apply for this change.
The government should stick to their word instead of causing more damage to trans and nonbinary people.
