Petition text

The climate crisis is here, and a new coal mine is simply unjustifiable. Reject plans for the mine and invest in cleaner, greener industries.

Why is this important?

We need to step up the pressure if we're going to stop the UK's first coal mine in 30 years. The new coal mine would damage our fight against the climate crisis and lock us into a project which would cause damaging pollution for years to come. Even the UK government's own climate experts have criticised the mine, which would create just 500 jobs compared to 9,000 from investing in green jobs instead.

This is an international issue. The eyes of the world are on Boris Johnson as he hosts a major international climate summit. He needs to lead by example if he's going to persuade other countries to take ambitious action on the climate. He can't do that by backing a new coal mine.

The government have already bowed to public pressure by hitting the pause button and calling a public inquiry. That’s a great result - but now we need them to reject the plans for good!
