To Sajid Javid - Chancellor of the Exchequer
Why is this important?
Right now Chancellor Philip Hammond is deciding whether to ease the pain facing thousands of families on low incomes struggling to get by. He’s thinking of giving Universal Credit a cash boost in the budget.
The government says Universal Credit is designed to make it easier for people to put a roof over their heads and food on their children’s plates. But it's failing. 38 Degrees-ers have shared how they have been left hundreds of pounds worse off, unable to pay bills and put food on the table, living in a constant state of fear and anxiety over their families’ future.
Philip Hammond can’t fix everything that’s wrong with Universal Credit. But he can decide to ease this pain and give these families some much needed extra cash in this years budget. An emergency petition, signed by hundreds of thousands of us, will send a clear message to the Chancellor: use the budget to help struggling families.
